3x All-Pro QB/WR-Marquelo Suel returns for 2023

by Erie Express Media

The Erie Express are pleased to announce the return of 3x All-Pro QB/WR-Marquelo Suel (Akron University) for the 2023 season. Marquelo begins his second year with the Express and was our starting quarterback for most of the season.

In 2022 the Erie Express were named USA Bowl Summer Division National Champions, won our Division of the GDFL for the fourth year in a row and qualified for the GDFL National Playoffs for the seventh season in a row. We will be heading to Florida again in January to face off against another defending champion in the Minneapolis Warriors. Marquelo played a major role in those team accolades.

In 6 games last season, primarily at the quarterback position, Quelo finished the season with 1,023 total yards and 11 touchdowns. He was 56/100 passing for 904 yards and 8 touchdowns and added another 119 yards and 3 touchdowns on the ground. Suel played one game at defensive back as well as a game at wide receiver. For his efforts he was named GDFL All-Pro for the 2022 season and nominated for several team awards (Winners yet to be announced)

Although new to the Express, Suel is no rookie. He has played professionally for the Ohio Broncos and Canton Pitbulls where he earned All-Pro status for both teams.

"Marquelo stepped in for us last year on short notice and did an amazing job. We used him mostly at QB but he also played defensive back and wide receiver. Rarely do you find an athlete as gifted as Quelo and with such a laid back team first demeanor. We love what he brings to the team and are looking forward to another great season from him in 2023."-Director of Operations Paul Pennington.

Suel is a graduate of Paul Harding, HS where he was an All-State selection at QB, WR and DB. Sr yr he ran for 500, passed for 600 and hauled in 500yds respectively. He was rated the #18 prospect in Indiana by Scout.com, was a PrepStar All-Midwest Region Selection. As a junior he hauled in 50 rec for 959yds and 12tds as Harding won the class 2A state championship

Marquelo played his college ball for the University of Akron where he was an All-MAC player for the Zips. Suel led the Zips in catches (76) and receiving yards (820) this season as a senior, and also had five touchdown receptions. Those 76 catches is the second most in a single season in program history, surpassing Domenik Hixon's 75 in 2005. The school record is held by Jabari Arthur, who had 86 in 2007.

A native of Fort Wayne, Ind., Suel closed out the regular season ranked fifth in the MAC and tied for 28th nationally in catches per game (6.3). He caught a career-high 12 passes for 92 yards at Tennessee on Sept. 29, which was three shy of tying the school's single-game best in that category. He had double-digit receptions in three games in 2012 and was a member of the Biletnikoff Award Watch List.

Suel finished his collegiate career with 110 catches (1,237 yards), the seventh most in school history, after posting 34 for 417 yards in 2011 as a redshirt junior. He utilized his redshirt in 2010 after transferring to UA from Allan Hancock (Calif.) Community College prior to that season. He signed with Indiana out of high school in 2008.https://gozips.com/story.aspx?filename=11_28_2012_1795&file_date=11/28/2012
